As a group of girls speeds across the finish line, one girl seems to be having trouble. Her legs begin shaking, making her lose her balance. A moment later, she falls into her coach's waiting arms. The same thing happens every time she races. Her name is Kayla Montgomery, and she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age fifteen. Once, during a soccer game, she started to feel something wrong in her legs and back and suddenly fell down. After months of tests, Kayla learned that she had multiple sclerosis. Known as MS, it is a disease that interrupts communication between the brain and other body parts. Because MS blocks her nerves from properly sending signals, particularly when she's warm, she cannot sense the pain that other runners feel. This makes running dangerous for her because she can't feel her legs by the end of the race, so she could fall and hurt herself. In addition, she damages tissues in her body when she keeps running. Kayla gets help at every finish line, where her coach catches her and her parents put ice on her legs to bring the sensation back. Kayla won the North Carolina state title in March 2014. Her next goal is winning the national title. She has said she was scared that she might not be able to run much longer. Nevertheless, she has decided to focus on what she's able to do now. MS may not have a cure, but that isn't going to stop her from running.
