Dark Tourism is travel that involves visiting and experiencing the sites of tragic events in human history, such as battlefields, disasters, and massacres, also known as Black Tourism or Grief Tourism. These trips allow visitors to reflect on the impact of past events on the present and the future, and increase the importance and understanding of historical facts through memory and respect for the victims.
Since 1996, when two academics from Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland, John Lennon and Malcome Foley, first proposed the concept of Dark Tourism, it has grown in demand around the world. This increase in travel demand is likely the result of a number of factors, including the ease of global mobility and increased public interest in historical tragedies, whether through media coverage or online dissemination.
However, Dark Tourism has sometimes been the subject of controversy among scholars and tourists alike, due to concerns that historical tragedy and grief can be commoditized and that respect for and remembrance of victims can be diminished. As a result, it is important for tourism operators and tourists alike to be ethically conscious and responsible.
In other words, the noble values of Dark Tourism will be preserved when it is understood and practiced as a way to learn historical lessons and honor victims, rather than as a mere attraction or entertainment.
