According to the story of Roman Gods, Vulcan was the god of fire.↵
His father was Jupiter, the king of the gods, and Juno was his mother, the queen of the gods.↵ Having Jupiter and Juno as parents, Vulcan was expected to be quite handsome, but baby Vulcan was small and ugly.↵ Juno was so surprised that she threw the baby on the top of Mount Olympus, the home of the gods.↵ Vulcan fell down for a day and a night.↵ Thetis, a sea-nymph, found him and treated him as her own son.↵ Vulcan lived in Mount Etna on the island of Sicily.↵ He worked in a shop inside a volcano.↵ Using the fire from a volcano, Vulcan was able to make very powerful weapons for Roman gods, but he was kind and peaceful.↵ He married Venus, the goddess of love and beauty.↵ It was said that whenever Vulcan fought with his wife, he became so angry that sparks and smoke rose up from the top of the mountain, creating a volcanic eruption. |

Before coins or paper money, people exchanged fish for stone tools or leather goods for wood.↵
↵ This method of exchanging one thing for something else is called bartering.↵ ↵ It is still in use today.↵ ↵ Sue might agree to fix Ramon's computer if Ramon agrees to take care of her dog for a day.↵ ↵ They have exchanged services.↵ ↵ Compared with bartering, money is much more convenient.↵ ↵ It can be used in most situations.↵ ↵ In a barter, each individual must have something to exchange.↵ ↵ But, if you use money, you can exchange the service with money.↵ ↵ For example, Sue and Ramon can agree to exchange computer work for pet sitting,↵ ↵ but Harold, another computer repairman, might insist on being paid in dollars and cents.↵ ↵ He can then spend the money on anything he wants. |

↵ There are about 6,000 languages in the world at present.↵ ↵ Experts say, however, half of the world's languages will have disappeared by 2050.↵ ↵ Some say that 90 percent of languages could be extinct by 2100.↵ ↵ Languages are becoming extinct at twice the rate of endangered animals!↵ ↵ Languages die for many reasons, and it happens when they are not passed on to the next generation.↵ ↵ For example, school children in Alaska are learning only two out of 20 native Alaskan languages. |
