Fritz Zwicky, a renowned astrophysicist known for coining the term ‘supernova,' was born in Varna, Bulgaria, to a Swiss father and a Czech mother. At six years old, he moved to Switzerland to live with his grandparents, who raised him and provided a strong education in mathematics and physics. In 1925, Zwicky emigrated to the United States, where he pursued his research at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). His numerous groundbreaking theories significantly shaped our understanding of the universe in the early 21st century. Appointed as a professor of astronomy at Caltech in 1942, he also played a key role in the development of some of the first jet engines and holds over 50 patents, primarily related to jet propulsion.
