Ants live in large groups called colonies. Hundreds of ants live in each colony. Each ant has its own job. Together the ants help their colony grow. Most ant colonies are in the ground. A colony has many cozy little rooms. Most ants in a colony are worker ants. They find food, care for the baby ants, and make the colony bigger. Worker ants are very strong. A single worker ant can carry something 20 times heavier than its own weight. That would be the same as a person being able to lift an elephant! If a worker ant finds food that is too big to carry, other worker ants help. While they work, they communicate in order to share information about food or to get help from others. The worker ants also care for the queen ant. The queen ant's job is to lay eggs. There may be one or more queens in each colony. They live up to 28 years. During that time, each queen lays thousands of eggs. These eggs become baby ants. Worker ants take care of the eggs until the baby ants are born.

What is a tsunami? A tsunami is a sea wave caused by an earthquake on the ocean floor. The sudden movement on the ocean floor causes strong waves. These waves can travel thousands of kilometers. In deep water, the waves can travel up to 750 kilometers per hour. In the case of the 2004 tsunami, the waves started in the middle of the Indian Ocean. In a few hours, the waves reached the shores of Thailand and Indonesia. About 7 hours later, they even reached East Africa. Tsunami waves are not very high in deep water although they travel fast. People in boats may ride over the waves without even noticing them. However, when the waves approach land and the water becomes shallow, the waves slow down and get bigger and bigger. People who saw the tsunami in 2004 said that the waves were almost 30 meters high. Tsunami waves are dangerous because it is difficult to see them growing from the beach. When people notice the huge waves coming toward them, it is already too late. This is why many people do not have enough time to escape from tsunamis.
