The development of quality and creative musical ideas takes time. Schools are set up such that teachers must work on a strict and limited time schedule, with few precious moments allowed in a week for music instruction, along with the additional burden of having to produce excellent concerts for public performance. Unfortunately, this hectic approach to teaching may be least conducive for creative thinking. Researchers have provided evidence that when given shorter time to work on a creative task, subjects produced lower scores on fluency, flexibility, and originality tests. Unfortunately, researchers found that students produce their most original ideas later in creative tasks rather than earlier. My own experience of teaching composition to children provides anecdotal evidence to support the notion that they need a significant amount of undisturbed time when composing. I often have had a difficult time convincing students to take a break, even after hours of working on a music composition project.

One way people simplify their decisions and make them more manageable is to reduce the number of consequences they consider. They're especially likely to ignore consequences that are thought to affect only a few people. But consequences that affect only a few people can be serious. For example, a highly beneficial drug may have positive consequences for many and adverse consequences for only a few people. But what if those few people could die from side effects of the drug? Obviously, you wouldn't want to ignore such serious consequences no matter how few people are affected. In attempting to consciously deal with this situation, it helps to consult a broad range of people who have a stake in the decision you're making. Invite input from all interested parties, especially those who disagree with you and those with the most to lose. Ask them what consequences they're concerned about and why. Then, include these consequences in your decision making.

Since all children must grow up surrounded by adults, they are predisposed to consider themselves small, weak and incapable of living alone. They do not trust themselves even to do those simple tasks of which adults believe they are capable without mistakes or clumsiness. Most of our errors in child-rearing begin at this point. When we demand more than children can do, the idea of their own helplessness is thrown into their faces. Some adults even consciously make children feel their smallness and helplessness. Others treat children as animated dolls to be played with. Others again treat children as valuable property that must be carefully watched, while still others make them feel they are so much useless human freight. A combination of these attitudes on the part of parents and other adults often lead children to believe they have control over only two things: the pleasure and displeasure of their elders.

Unlike goods, services can't be stored. Instead, their production and consumption occurs simultaneously. Firms that provide services must maintain enough capacity to meet peak demand periods or they will face a physical backlog of customers. In the case of air travel, if you fly during peak periods, you will join a queue of fellow passengers waiting in line to check their luggage. To reduce the backlog, most service delivery systems use reservations and appointments. Services are time perishable. An empty seat at a theater or an empty hotel room will never be available again for that particular play or for that specific night, which demonstrates why services cannot be inventoried and stored for later use. Services cannot be transferred or reused but must be sold directly to a customer.
