Our group has a lot of interest in the combination of heritage and science.

So we studied conservation science and looked at examples of Korean cultural heritage.

그래서 우리는 보존 과학에 대해 공부하고, 한국 문화유산의 예를 살펴보았다.

This object may look like trash or burnt paper.

이 사물은 쓰레기나 불에 탄 종이처럼 보일 수도 있다.

However, it is the first image of the documents found inside Bulguksa samcheung seoktap (Seokgatap) in 1966.

그러나 이것은 1966년에 불국사 삼층 석탑(석가탑) 안에서 발견된 문서의 최초 모습이다.

After a long conservation process, these documents finally revealed their identity.

긴 보존 과정 후에 이 문서는 마침내 자신의 정체를 드러냈다.

The documents, known as Mukseojipyeon, include important information about Seokgatap.

묵서지편이라고 알려진 이 문서는 석가탑에 관한 중요한 정보를 포함하고 있다.

People believed that the pagoda had never previously been restored or repaired.

사람들은 그 탑이 이전에 복원되거나 수리된 적이 없다고 믿었다.

However, according to Mukseojipyeon, Seokgatap was restored during the Goryeo Dynasty.

그러나 묵서지편에 따르면 석가탑은 고려 시대에 복원되었다.

As the example of Mukseojipyeon shows, conservation science plays an important role in revealing historical truth.

묵서지편의 예가 보여 주듯이, 보존 과학은 역사적 진실을 밝히는 데 중요한 역할을 한다.

It not only restores cultural heritage to its original form but also reveals its hidden stories.

그것은 문화유산을 원래 형태로 되돌릴 뿐만 아니라 그 뒤에 숨겨진 이야기 또한 밝힌다.

These beautiful caps are replicas of Baekje geumdonggwanmo.

이 아름다운 관모들은 백제 금동관모의 복제품이다.

The kings of Baekje often gave them to local leaders as rewards for their loyalty.

백제의 왕들은 종종 지역 수령들에게 충성심에 대한 보상으로 그것들을 주었다.

The caps are famous for their delicate and beautiful patterns.

Without conservation science, we would have never known about these beautiful patterns.

Let's see how the cap was restored by conservation scientists.

보존 과학자들에 의해 관모가 어떻게 복원되었는지 살펴보자.

First, conservation scientists used X-ray photography to determine the original form. Then the cap was broken down into parts.

먼저, 보존 과학자들은 원래 형태를 알아내기 위해 X선 사진술을 사용했다. 그 다음, 관모는 부분별로 분해되었다.

During this process, conservation scientists removed foreign matter and rust from the surface and controlled corrosion with a chemical treatment.

이 과정에서 보존 과학자들은 표면의 이물질과 녹을 제거하고, 화학적 처리를 통해 부식을 방지했다.

All the parts were then glued together and any damaged parts were repaired.

그 후에 모든 부분들이 접합되고, 손상된 부분은 수리되었다.

At last, the cap regained its original form and shine.

마침내 관모는 원래 형태와 광채를 되찾았다.

Gyeongcheonsa sipcheung seoktap is well-known for its elaborate decorations, splendid shape, and unique structure.

경천사 십층 석탑은 정교한 장식과 화려한 형태, 그리고 독특한 구조로 유명하다.

The pagoda was originally built in 1348 during the Goryeo Dynasty, but it was disassembled and illegally transported to Japan by a Japanese court official.

이 탑은 원래 고려 시대인 1348년에 지어졌으나 일본 궁내 대신에 의해 분해되어 불법적으로 일본으로 옮겨졌다.

After it was returned to Korea in 1918, it was left disassembled for forty years at Gyeongbokgung Palace.

그것은 1918년 한국에 돌아온 후에 40년 동안 분해된 채로 경복궁에 방치되었다.

Conservation skills at that time were not good enough to restore it.

그 당시 보존 기술은 그것을 복원할 정도로 훌륭하지 않았다.

Although the pagoda was first restored in 1960, it suffered from wind, rain, and so on as time went by.

비록 그 탑은 1960년에 처음 복원되기는 했지만, 시간이 지나면서 바람과 비, 그리고 그 밖의 것들 때문에 고통 받았다.

So the pagoda was repaired again and moved inside the National Museum of Korea in 2005.

그래서 그 탑은 다시 보수되었고, 2005년에 국립 중앙 박물관의 내부로 이전되었다.

It took almost ten years, from 1995 to 2005, to re-restore the pagoda.

그 탑을 또다시 복원하는 데 1995년부터 2005년까지 거의 10년이 걸렸다.

Conservation scientists removed the cement used in the first restoration process.

보존 과학자들은 첫 번째 복원 과정에서 사용된 시멘트를 제거했다.
