Potatoes are one of the world's major sources of food. But in the 16th century, Europeans did not like them. Some Europeans called the potato the devil's plant because it grows underground. Other people were cared of the plant's poisonous flowers. In addition, people ate raw potatoes because they did not know how to cook them. This caused them to have serious stomachaches. Despite these problems, Friedrich II, King of Prussia, thought potatoes could be a big help to his hungry people. So the kind told his soldiers to plant potatoes in his garden. Then he ordered the soldiers to watch over them. This made people think the potatoes were precious. So people started growing potatoes themselves and even sold them in markets. Soon, potatoes became popular across Europe. That's how Friedrich II got his nickname, the Potato King.

In New Orleans, you can see marching jazz bands playing joyful music during funerals. This might seem strange, but African Americans in New Orleans often celebrate at funerals. There is a good reason for this. When Africans were brought to New Orleans hundreds of years ago, they worked as slaves and had hard lives. In their free time, they used music to express their feelings. They believed that when they died, their souls would fly back to their homeland. In other words, death would free them from their hard lives. That's why people celebrate with cheerful jazz music at funerals. Though slavery has disappeared from New Orleans, people still enjoy music at funerals, just like in the past.

Have you ever eaten food that you accidentally dropped on the floor? Some people believe that they can make food clean by just blowing on it. In fact, according to the so-called "five-second rule," food is safe to ear if it has been on the floor for less than five seconds. However, is this really true? To find out, a scientist placed some bread on a dirty floor for different lengths of time. Then he checked it for bacteria. He found that time is not an important factor when food is exposed to bacteria. The moment this happens, food can become unsafe to eat.

The next time you are at a museum, look at the portraits very carefully. You will notice that most portraits show the left side of the person's face. There are some reasons for this. First, it's connected with how the brain influences the appearance of people. The right side of the brain controls the left side of the body. And human emotions are controlled by the right side of the brain. Thus, the left side of the face shows more emotion. For this reason, people look better when their left side is shown. Another reason is that most painters are right-handed. That makes it easier for them to draw the left side of a subject. Therefore, if a right-handed artist draws your picture, make sure to show the left side of your face. That way, you will look your best!
