Before making a decision, one must consider various pieces of information. While some details are relevant, others aren't. The presence of unrelated bits of information decreases the value of the relevant ones due to a phenomenon known as the dilution effect. This happens because people mentally evaluate all the details by giving each one a score. They award more points to important details and fewer points to unimportant ones, and, ultimately, come up with an average. The end result is that their judgment is negatively affected. For instance, say a lawyer is trying to convince the judge that a client is not guilty of a crime. The most important point is that the client was out of town when the crime took place. Rather than focusing on that one fact, however, the lawyer also mentions many details about the client's background, family, job, and personality, making the lawyer's case become less persuasive to the judge.

But this relatively new business model is having a devastating impact on the environment. One negative effect that this industry has on the environment is the release of vast quantities of toxins into rivers, lakes, and oceans. These include substances such as copper, mercury, and chromium that are harmful to both humans and wildlife. In fact, fast fashion companies are now counted among the largest contributors to water pollution. Research shows that the treatment and dyeing of the fabrics used to make clothing accounts for 20 percent of the world's wastewater. To make matters worse, much of the clothing created by the fast fashion industry is low quality and gets thrown out rather quickly, resulting in 92 million tons of clothes-related waste being produced each year.

Can we always assume that the boiling point of water is at 100 degrees Celsius? The boiling point is the specific temperature at which vapor pressure equals that of the surrounding air. However, the boiling point of a liquid isn't fixed; it varies significantly based on the elevation at which the liquid is heated, as air pressure decreases with increased elevation. Consequently, in regions with higher elevations, water boils at temperatures lower than the normal 100 degrees Celsius. For example, in Colorado, a state in America with an average elevation of over two kilometers, water boils at roughly 94 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the boiling point of water is about 100 degrees Celsius in places closer to sea level, such as New Orleans. These differences in boiling point can affect cooking times. Making a hard-boiled egg in Colorado will take longer than in many other places because it will be cooking at a lower temperature.
