In Korea, turtles symbolize a long life because they usually live for 30 to 50 years.

That is longer than many other animals!

That's why Korean people sometimes give a miniature gold turtle as a present on a baby's first birthday.

They also used to believe that turtles could predict the future and were messengers between gods and humans.

People thought of tigers in two ways back then.

Sometimes people thought tigers were brave, cruel, and greedy.

Other times they thought tigers were good luck and protected people from diseases.

Because it is a mysterious animal, the tiger is the most popular animal in Korean folk paintings.

When someone dreams of a tiger, it is a sign that they should take a public position.

People consider the deer a special animal because it is beautiful and calm.

Deer always move together and look out for one another.

Whenever they go to different places, they always make sure that none of the deer are missing.

When a deer was painted with pine trees and rocks, it usually meant "power" or "authority."

"Father, Father!"

The people of Tonj, South Sudan, were all crying.

Some children were walking with pictures of a man.

They had lost very special person.

The man in the picture was Father Lee Taeseok, a Korean priest and doctor.

In 2001, Father Lee Taeseok visited Tonj to help the sick and poor people there.

Life in Tonj was very difficult, so he soon returned to Korea.

However, he could not forget the people there.

So, he flew to Tonj again later that year.

From then on, Father John Lee, as the villagers called him. worked tirelessly as a doctor, teacher, and musician.

First, he built a hospital and treated 300 people a day.

Then he built a school.

He even taught math and music and made a band with the villagers.
When the music filled the air, the villagers was filled with hopes and dreams too.


Unfortunately, in 2008 Father Lee Taeseok discovered that he had cancer.
He tried to fight it, but he passed away two years later at the age of 48.

Many people were very sad to hear of his death.

Today, he is widely admired for his beautiful mind and great love for others.
